Eric Ravilious Prints: ‘Belle Tout – Beachy Head Lighthouse’. ‘Belle Tout – Beachy Head Lighthouse’, Eric Ravilious, watercolour, 1939. ‘Just now I am busy on the hills painting,’ Ravilious wrote to his friend Diana Tuely, ‘in the greatest comfort with my jacket off, and seated in a magnificent Chinese chair. That is to say I am perched in the top of the Belle Tout lighthouse (I wish you could see this) in the lantern drawing the immense expanse below with a gale blowing outside’. The scene described above is immortalised in Beachy Head Lighthouse Belle Tout – one of this artist’s best known works – now available as a giclée print using pigment-based inks, on acid and lignin-free museum quality paper. Eric Ravilious (22 July 1903 – 2 September 1942) was an exceptional watercolourist, wood engraver and designer. He grew up in the shadow of the Sussex Downs in the coastal town of Eastbourne, the surrounding landscape of which heavily influenced many of his best known works. His instantly recognisable style, palette and choice of subject have an almost universal appeal, a blend which has increased in popularity with the passing of time, particularly in the first two decades of the 21st century.
