Much of Alexander’s work can be said to belong to the Neo-Romantic tradition, and certain of the paintings are very reminiscent of Ravilious. But this is more akin to John Nash’s work (see ‘Landscape at Hadleigh’ for instance). Perhaps this is not surprising: both artists shared a love of plant life; of geological forms underlying the landscape, and both explored the effects of the seasons on landscape. And this is Great Bardfield, where of course Nash, Ravilious, Bawden et al – along with Alexander – lived. Although Alexander wasn’t amongst the inner circle here, she knew these artists, and they shared this landscape. This is early spring: the branches are still bare but the field has been ploughed, and a magnificent sun is full of promise for the year ahead. -
